California Sister
Adelpha californica

Observation date: May 28, 2012
Submitted by: shakespearenut
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This is not my picture. Last September I spotted one of these at the Monrovia Canyon (sighting 687333). I described it and you accepted it. It is a very easy butterfly to identify. I was surprised to only see one on my visit to the canyon today. Last time, I spotted several. Today's prolific butterfly is the one I just submitted before this (with the blurry picture). Maybe it was the time of day or time of year. I don't know. But I am 100% sure of this sighting. There is no mistaking this beautiful butterly. (But, you don't have to accept this sighting. I am a plebian--what do I know?)

Coordinator notes: You probably visited that location between broods, California Sisters are multiple brooded. I saw none yesterday in an area where they are normally common in the southern Sierra. They were there a week before.
