Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found in my yard in Rochester, NY on a young Black Walnut sapling. He appeared to have been eating the leaves. He was roughly 2.75 inches long. It was sunny and warm, and he seemed to be aware of my presence.

Coordinator notes: I have reared this species on Butternut. I believe this is a mid instar Catocala piatrix. They generally roost during the day. (Barb Sendelbach) http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=8771 Barb is probably right; I'm accepting this as Catocala sp.
