Observation notes: I was at the Kokan Japanese Gardens in New Denver, BC on the shore of Slocan Lake and saw this small black butterfly and took the picture. Time of day was early afternoon. Given that the Japanese Garden has a few exotic species of trees and shrubs, I can only speculate that the butterfly egg(s) may have come along for the ride when some new plantings were made in the Garden.
