Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Saw this butterfly in our yard several times over the last few days. Tried to get a better pic of the top of the wings, but the butterfly was just moving along feeding on the lantana, holding its wings folded up the whole time. When it flew from flower to flower it was so fast that all I could manage was a very blurry shot. The last few days the temperatures around that time of day have been in the upper 70's to low 80's. There was not much of a breeze at all, and the times the butterfly was here the sun was on the plants. We saw it briefly the first time, but on the 16th it stayed in our yard for at least 1 1/2 hours. We have a host plant for longwings in our yard, and have many of them, and this butterfly is approximately the same size when its wings are up, but when it is flying its wings are more "fluttery" than those on longwings.
