Gulf Fritillary
Agraulis vanillae

Observation date: September 04, 2013
Date notes: I just joined, and have not yet submitted this butterfly, but I first saw it about 5 years ago in our backyard. After sending an entomologist at the Agricultural Commisioner's office a pic, he idententified it as such. The email regarding this is dated 09/04/2008, but as far as a date is concerned, you could pick just about any date since then that ranges from early summer to the first real cold snap.

Observation notes: Since the first one came in 2008, my family has planted a passion vine, and we now have very many. This time of year they are mating, and laying eggs everywhere. They are very strong flyers, and like to feed on our lantana and our butterfly bush. There are a few other plants inthe yard they will feed on, too, but I do not know their names. I only wish I could submit more pictures; I have pictures of mating, caterpillars and pupae.
