Five-spotted hawkmoth
Manduca quinquemaculata

Observation date: July 20, 2014
Submitted by: Jimulacrum
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Moth measures about 3 1/2 inches wingtip to wingtip, and 2 1/8 inches "tail to snout" as shown in overhead image. Found under a porch chair in the shade on a sunny, warm day, in the middle of my garden (only flowers currently in bloom are zinnias). Very still and calm. Climbed onto a gardening tool and allowed me to move it to safer, higher ground on a napkin (out of the cat's reach). Allowed me to touch its wing without flinching a couple times too. Appears unable or unwilling to fly, but did jump off the gardening tool once and safely glide to the ground. Only example of this type that I have seen around here.
