Identification: Distinguished from American Dagger Moth by slightly smaller size and absence of median line on hindwing. Hindwing white in male, gray in female.
Wing Span: 4.5-5 cm.
Life History:
Flight: May-August.
Caterpillar Hosts: Alders, birches, cottonwood, poplars, and willows.
Adult Food:
Habitat:
Range: Newfoundland to North Carolina mountains, west to Manitoba and Illinois.

Taxonomy Notes: Acronicta insita (Walker, 1856) includes as synonyms Acronicta dactylina (Grote, 1874) [9203], n. syn., and Acronicta hesperida (Smith, 1897) [9204], rev. syn., in Schmidt & Anweiler (2020), MONA Fascicle 25.4: 160.
