Aetole extraneella (Walsingham, 1881)


Family: Heliodinidae
Subfamily:
Identification: FW bright vermillion, its silvery spots small and restricted to the costal and dorsal margins.
Wing Span: 0.56-0.84 cm
Life History:
Flight: bivoltine more abundant in fall in CA.
Caterpillar Hosts: The larvae are leaf miners and bore into immature pods of Clarkia and several species of Epilobium particularly E.(Zauschneria) canum . It has been recorded from Gaura in Utah.
Adult Food: various flowers especially Aseraceae.
Habitat:
Range: California and southern British Columbia. There is an unconfirmed record from Utah.
