Identification: Forewing mottled, sooty blackish (rarely lighter gray) with diffuse whitish st. band that widens toward costa. Note whitish patch over subreniform spot. Hindwing orangish red with black bands.
Wing Span: 6-7 cm.
Life History:
Flight: Late July - Sept.
Caterpillar Hosts: Poplars and willows.

Range: Newfoundland to New Jersey, west across Canada, south to Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
