Subfamily: Erebinae
Identification: North America's only underwing with black and white bands on hindwing. Forewing varies from gray to blackish and white, providing camouflage when moth rests on brich bark.
Wing Span: 7-8 cm.
Life History:
Flight: July-October.
Caterpillar Hosts: Poplars, quaking aspen, and willows.
Adult Food:
Habitat:
Range: Newfoundland to Pennsylvania, west across Canada, south to Missouri. Strays reported from Kentucky and Mississippi.
